I've never tried it but lots of people have. It has been in use by westerners for at least the last fifty years and by people in South America for thousands of years prior to that. From everything I have heard or read the experience is of the life-changing variety, for better or worse. It is regarded as a medicine traditionally and experimentation should not be entered into lightly.

Wikipedia has a good amount of starting info linked below. There are many experiences written up and available online, try forums.ayahuasca.com.

This must be done with a professional who knows what he/she is doing. Best is to find a Shaman so it can be used in as traditionally and honorably as possible. It is drawn as a tea, taken with prayer and then this amazing plant will take you on a journey like no other. Some think it is pure hallucinogenic and others believe that the plant has extraordinary power of "journeying." I only did it once under the best of conditions described above, and it was such an agonizing and pleasurable experience and so intense that I will never need to do it again. Some people require many journeys to accomplish what will become revealed during the journey; whereas others, like me, may accomplish such immediately. A lot depends on your ability to process your experience thereafter. My journey took me into a realm where I realized that I was able to witness the "birth of my soul." Now if you know me, you will find that I am a very normal reasonable person and not an "abi=gabi" type. That said, you be the judge. My experience felt like years and could be the subject of an entire book as the memory is vivid and intense. Not recommended as I witnessed one guy flip out and have a bad experience; yet recommended because it was positively life altering for me. Good luck.
