The great authors of the U.S. declaration of independence used this as a KEY item...
They were, under the cruel, greedy, arrogant British rule,
very UN happy.
Just the right to be happy does not seem like much at first, but it is the QUEST to be happy- whatever it is at the moment,
is the important thing... And the right to be able to STRIVE for happiness, is a constitutional imperative. Unfortunately, some people do take this to mean a shinier bigger car or something shallow, but, there are many who see the true meaning !

It's cyclic. Everyone has troubles now and then.
John 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Without a little rain everything would be a desert.
Happiness, peace and joy is attainable and a reasonable expectation through it all because God is in complete control and His will is being accomplished.
As far as contentment - you're right - "stuff" doesn't get it.
For me, growing in my spiritual walk, helping others, sharing my life experiences with them, witnessing to others by word and deed, being a good parent and husband - these are important. The #1 thing that brings the most contentment is knowing with absolute certainty that Jesus is alive and well, that He loves me, thinks of me, prays for me, knows my name, and has prepared a place for me in heaven.

What makes me content is not things, it's the knowledge that I am on the right path in my life. If I have unhappy feelings that stay around, it's because I'm doing or thinking something that is not for my own well-being and growth. I've had many bad things happen to me in my life. Many people wouldn't have lived through it, I almost didn't. But through it all, I've managed to come out okay and happy. I have stopped looking to others for validation or for others to fix my problems. All that I need comes from within and in the knowledge of life and it's purpose that I have gained. Don't take that as I live in an empty apartment with no one or something. I need a comfy home and someone to share my life with, but my source of happiness comes from within myself.

Happiness isn't a goal, it's a byproduct. It's the feeling you get from knowing that you've been effective and done well. You don't pursue happiness; it comes if you live in accordance with the set of values that seem right to you.

Great point, to be content with what you have is the greatest lesson to learn, there are many people who do not stop to appreciate or be thankful for what they have because they blindly pursue things they want instead.

My expectation is to experience the gamut of emotions during my life. My favorite emotions are compassion, hope and yes, contentment.

I will never be happy until I am in heaven again, but I can choose to live in joy every day, where my attitude and my thoughts are based on hope and on God, and I can look forward to my happy days with Him.

happiness comes in very small doses, contentment is a bit easier to find, but usually not till you are old. if you find it you are lucky.

I believe happiness is a choice. I can choose to let things upset me or not. I refuse to let negative things steal my joy.
