I'm looking for a REALLY small type of dog, like a toy/teacup dog. But I have read that many teacup dogs have health problems? Thanks!

No dog is ever cheap. IT can cost near $1000 a year to own a dog. The cost to purchase the dog is just the first step, its nothing compared to vet fees, feeding fees, and other care, like grooming, toys etc. The small breeds are usually more prone to health problems, in a general sense, it depends greatly on the breed, and the breeder of the dog. Also ask yourself why you want a small breed dog anyways. Your best bet is to go to your local humane society/animal shelter and look for a dog to melt your heart. You shouldnt get a dog because of how it looks withyou or it would make you cool, a dog is a lifetime commitment. You cant just get a dog and later decide you dojnt want it anymore, it depends on you to care for it its entire life. Also the shelter/society would be able to talk to you and let you know what they think the best breed for you is, and most of the time they will have the dog neutered/spayed before it goes home and some will even have them up to date on vaccines. Dont forget most places will require a license that must be renewed each year, an added expense and responsibility. Please dont rush into getting a dog, this is a huge step and it takes a lot of thought and preperation. Remember this little fuzzy thing will be completely dependent on you and expect you to take good care of it for the rest of its life.

The Chihuahua is the smallest dog, there is not such thing as a T cup in the Chihuahua.
Some breeders stick that cute name on the runt from a litter. The runt of any breed dog will possibly be sick and develop health problems.
Don't confuse a small bred dog with a runt.
Chihuahua are very popular and as such you can expect to pay between 500 and 900 for a well bred, healthy puppy with a health guarantee. You will need to add an additional 250 to 300 if the puppy has to be shipped to you.

DizzyDaisy Can you please show me a registry for a T cup Chihuahua....can't be done !!!!!!

Chiwouwa I cant spell it but if you take it with you to a shelter or petshop they will know exactly what I am on about.
The best thing with them is that they are extremly intelligent and small enough to have even in a one bedroom flat.
They do have a reputation to be barkers but it is NOT their breed but how their owners treat them.
They also dont have any more health problems then your adverage dog or cat as long as you dont feed them junk food and they are very loyal. If you are looking for a dog you want to be around all the time and give attention to all day it would be a beagle they never have any "special" diseases or health problem with their breed but the problem is not to feed it sweets throughout the day as they have a tendency to become obese but the female can reach up to 33 cm in height and males 38 cm in height the only other problem is that beagles should never be off lead out in the open as they have little or no traffic sense and go into hunting mode so if you want to play with them off lead do it in the back yard or take them out into a nature reserve or something like that where there are a few acres to play in.
I hope this info helps

No dog is cheap to maintain. The healthiest small dog is the Norwich Terrier, but I doubt it is a cheap dog. Try a shelter pet from such places as members.aol.com/lucountydogs.
Greg Allman adopted one here recently(The Allman Brothers). It's a great place. petfinder.com is too. Find a pet that would be killed if not for your love and care.Thousands are euthanized ever day coz no one wants them.

Just look at #6 on the site I mentioned. See how scared she is now? The pound is not a fun place. If you can read the poem at the bottom, I think you will always adopt a shelter pet.

Small dogs are hard to breed so they are not cheap. If they are cheap they are probably flawed. You get what you pay for. That said don't go to a pet shop Or a breeder that advertised teacups it is a bogus term that refers to runts being bred with runts. Develop a relationship with a good toy breeder and save up to afford the best. Don't forget vet bills because they are higher for toys in some cases too.

The BEST is a dog that needs a home, from a kill shelter. Just pick the smallest. Most purebreds all have some genetic health problems, no matter the size, so pick a small pound puppy!

Yorkies and chihuahuas are pretty much the smallest. I almost got a chihuahua at an adoption fair- he would've been free (expcept basic adoption costs which cover their vet costs etc). I wound up getting my dogs (1/2 yorkie, 1/2 japanese chin) from a friend in Florida for $300 each. they are 2lbs (female) and 6 lbs (male). Try sites like 'craigslist.com' in other states where they might be cheaper. i found that more rural areas are better places to find more affordable little dogs because bigger dogs are just as, or more popular in places with big property. NEVER buy from pet stores! most of them support "puppy mills" which are very abusive and dangerous towards dogs. Good luck!

What makes you think small dogs are cheap? Best yet, what makes you think ANY dog is cheap? If you are short on money, don't get a dog. Purchase price means NOTHING after the first day. Food, accessories and vet care are due to pile on top. No dog is cheap. End of story. Why not settle for a cat?

Intensive in-breeding is often required to produce those tiny dogs.

Breeding brother to sister and son to mother for many generations magnifies and multiplies genetic problems.

Like others have said, go to a resue organization for your dog. I got my boy from the dog pound 12 years ago, he is the joy of my life, and the best dog that has ever owned me.

Well it depends where you look. If you look around online, you might find what your looking for, www.petfinder.com is a good place to look, or in a shelter. Also, you could check local newspapers. In my newspapers, i have seen registered Jack russle pups (i went and saw them, they were very healthy too), for $150. I've also seen chihuahua pups for $350. It really depends where you look. And, to avoid health problems, check the lines to make sure that the pups ancestors have all been healthy dogs. hope this helps.
