If only you were travelling to St. Ives (i.e. the others were either heading toward St. Ives but getting off the path at a stop before, or were travelling some other way), then the answer is easy. One.

If they were travelling to St. Ives too, then the answer would seem at first to boil down to you plus one man, seven wives, 49 sacks, 343 cats, and 2,401 kittens. That's 2,802 things.

On the other hand, when we travel, we don't usually count our luggage as being among the things that travel with us, do we? So eliminate the 49 sacks from the count and you have 2,753 beings.

Assuming St. Ives is in a foreign country, consider the 2,744 felines. That's an awful lot of cats to import (and a lot to carry--with each wife carrying 392 cats, they must *really* have gotten a workout!). The border officials might confiscate most, if not all of them.

Finally, the man and his wives might then be allowed to pass (assuming they don't get turned away at the border for carrying so many live animals), but then what if the country's laws don't recognize his marriages beyond his first wife? Worse still, depending on the country, they may well be inadmissible into the country because he's a polygamist.

In that case, that probably would still leave only you.

You never bothered to say if they were travelling there too. And you didn't ask about anything other than "kits cats sack wives" so I'll just say divide by zero...

trick ?

One was traveling to st. ives, met a man w/ kits, cats, sacks and wives, along the way. Which direction were they traveling, to or from st. ives? If they were all traveling to st. ives and you were fast enough to catch up with them, what then? Without knowing that, it can't be answered.

I got:
seven wives, 49 sacks, 343 cats, 2401 kittens, plus the one man.
total: 2800, plus the one man, if you're counting him (with him=2801)
