First of all, if the deceased had an insurance policy, that could be used to cover funeral expenses. I'm sure that funeral homes do not just "write off" bad debt. Any payment options would have to be made with the funeral home and they would also be the ones to point you in the right direction for any assistance that might be out there.

Secondly, if this is a personal question, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Yes, there is typically cost assistance from your county assistance office, but it is a minimal amount (usually for a cremation only) and the funeral home must agree to participate in the program. As far as payment plans, it all depends on the funeral home. While we would like to help everyone out, we have bills to pay and mouths to feed also. (For instance, my mortgage on my funeral home is over $5,000 per month, so I depend on prompt payment). And no, we cannot write it off if you simply decide not to pay, we are then forced to take legal action. I strongly recommend calling the assistance office to see what your options are and then call a funeral home to see what options they can offer you. God bless, and my deepest sympathies.

It depends on the funeral home, but some will offer cost assistance and payment options.

About 8 years ago my older brother took his life in a psychiatric hospital. Our family only had 3 days to arrange and have his body picked up or they were going to ship his body to Washington DC for science. Unfortunately, no one at the time in our family had much money, but we wanted so desperately to have our brother, son, grandson, come home to rest. He had lived such a difficult and unfortunate life, but with a wonderful soul! After explaining our circumstances to a local funeral home, they took the time to drive an hour and a half both ways to pick up my brother and ate the costs for the cremation. And on top of it they were so kind to come into our home and hold a vigil. We were so thankful and grateful for them. Although this answer isn't exactly what you were looking for I hope that it gives you some hope into finding a solution. There are those out there who really do care for more than just money. Good luck! And I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

Call the furneral homes and ask. If you are a hard-ship case, you should tell the funeral home prior to hiring them. They may take checks or credit cards.

The least expensive funeral arrangement is cremation.

I do know the city will pay for "Cremations" if you explain that your in a financial "Crunch", and if you have kids, or neighborhood kids, that know you, you can ask them if they'll help you to do a "Car-wash" over a couple of weekends for like $5.00 a car.... If you have the kids make signs saying its a "Fund-raiser" alot of the car-owners will donate more than the $5.00, fee.. I've seen this done over & over again, in my town, at "Business Parking lots" I guess if you get permission from the owners of the "Businesses" they usually have "Compassion" and dont charge anything, for use of their parking lot..... You just need to get enough kids together to help!! Good-Luck, to you, and I'm very sorry for your "Loss".....
