Let's just say I was practically falling asleep and ignoring this person in order for them to leave. They didn't get the hint.

Just say that you have an early day tomorrow and really need to get some sleep.

Stop the problem before it starts by giving them both a "from" and "to" time, the way you would with a party. When you invite them over, just say to them, "do you want to come over tonight? why don't you come around 6 until 11, does that work?" and then when it gets to be 10:30, 10:45, you can say "wow, it's almost 11 already!" and start cleaning up. If you let them know before hand what time you want them out, it won't seem as rude.

It is very difficult, almost impossible to tell a guest to leave without offending or at least hurting their feelings.

The closest is to jump up, and say, OMIGOD! Is it that late? I have to get up early for overtime. Can we call tomorrow and make a date for you to come back so we can continue this excellent conversation? I am so sorry that I have to work overtime because we are having such a great time.

Beware of this if the person works with you, hee, hee.

Politely tell them that you are getting tired and must turn in, then see them to the door. You can help soften this by either setting a date for another get together or telling them that you must be in touch within the next few days to schedule another get together.

You can ask someone to leave very nicely. Just tell your guest that you have had a very long day and that you were so glad to see them and have them as your guest, but you have a long day tomorrow and it's time for the night to end.

We have friends who start with the kids, telling them to give goodnight kisses and hugs, because it's past everyone's bed time and it's time to call it a night. For us, that our cue that it's time to go!

Depending on the time of day, if it's evening I'd say I've had fun talking, but I need to get to bed, I have a busy day tomorrow or if it's day time, say I've enjoyed talking with you but I have an appointment in an hour and I need to get ready.

Just say, "I'm really sorry to cut our night short, but I've very tired and I think I need to get some sleep. Thanks so much for coming over though!!! Wanna do something next week?" That seems to work for me when they're not getting the hint.

Just politely say "If you don't mind, I'm ready to call it a night. Let me walk you to the door. Next time, let's meet somewhere for lunch when I have more time to spend with you."
