Eastern countries have always been bullied by the west cuz they have had more power. Now the tables have turned and the west feel threatened by us.(cuz we have the oil and we wont give it to them) Therefore they will do anything to get rid of us (muslims)

wow..some of these answers i am reading are so idiotic. i read an answer saying that muslims are killing women and innocent children. well...why dont u read the newspaper or do some research before saying who is killing more the US or all the muslim people. Some people act so stupid... they say things from what their parents probably taught them to say.. like... arabs are dangerous people, muslims are all terrorists, ect ect.... im not saying everyone says that to their children...but i bet a lot of people do. nobody is perfect! anywayz im getting carried away

I think it is reasonable to say that the 'west' has a huge stake in keeping a steady supply of oil into their economies, and some are a bit more aggressive in ensuring their supply than others.

The countries having oil need to be tied in such a way that the oil supply is assured, hence a strong 'Western' presence, whether in the form of conglomerates with military bases, or the army with conglomerates.

Now the problem is two-fold. First since these oil-rich countries pose no military threat (despite Mr Powell's 'evidence' for example). On the other hand some of the people in these countries are not the type to lie back and watch this 'invasion' happen. The more extreme of these people decide to hit back.

The crucial difference now is that since ideology isn't enough of a differentiating factor, religion is being used by both sides as a rallying call. The conflict has become one of religion, although the underlying cause is a resource.

Let me put it this way... If most of the oil was found in Cambodia rather than in the Middle East, then we'd be hearing how Cambodians included people like Pol Pot and how they are dangerous and a threat to society...

Religious differences exist, but aren't really the crux of the 'conflict'; it's resources, resources... Religion is just a banner to rally people. How many people would be so supportive of their side if they were told it was a resource war?
