I came a cross this while reading featured questions, but didn't know what that meant. Is it sort of what Pope John Paul II did to apologize for Catholic Church backed slavery?

Catholic apologists are defenders of the Doctrine of the Faith. They incorporate reason and logic along with Church Documentations to defend the integrity of the Catholic Church against all irrational slander and libel.

Apologists are good at answering honest questions from those who are just curious about the Catholic, as opposed to those who are looking for a debate.

Some might accuse Catholic apologists of being stubbornly "confrontational".

Stubbirn, well yeah. Given the very nature of what they do, they have to be stubborn.

Confrontational? No, so long as the apologist remembers he is a defender, meaning not to go on the offensive.

Apologist in ancient terms meant defender.

So a Catholic Apologist is a Defender of the Faith.

Pope John Paul II was a simple man with a great heart for justice, forgiveness, and love for Jesus Christ.

No a Catholic apologist is really just the opposite of that. They are defenders of the Catholic faith who try to come up with intellectual arguments to back up their faith.

In the context you ask about "apologist" does not mean the same thing as "one who apologizes," but someone who explains or clarifies some aspect of doctrine.

The Popes apology was an apology.

Aplogetics is the reasons and defense of the Catholic faith. Its almost like saying, "Sorry, but *this* is what we believe...." when someone is incorrect about doctrine, etc.
