I have a calico (female) cat named Gary. My husband enjoys naming our animals names of the opposite gender.

The animals can't tell if a name is male or female. In fact, they don't even know that a name is a name. They just associate the sound with giving you their attention.

We have a girl dog named Rhys. Rhys is a guy's name. The dog is Welsh, the name is Welsh. My son loved the name.
Rhys comes when called. It doesn't seem to bother her in the least.
