Freezer burn has a definite smell. I would download a food expiration dates or limits chart off the internet & use it as your guide. Also, as a general rule I'd not keep anything past say 3 months MAX past the suggested limit date as it is just not worth it to get a possible case of food poisoning. If you don't know when it's from...toss it out. Every food is different as to whether it will just taste bad or actually make you sick that is why you have to trust the experts. Try the Food & drug administration website or even the Food Network. That should hopefully help.

In these matters it is always better to be safe than sorry. If you look at it, wouldn't eat it now--then you can know that being in the freezer isn't going to improve it any.

I hate throwing out money, but sometimes you have to sweep the decks clean and just vow to do better. Good luck!

The best thing is that you use your own judgement. If the food looks bad, smell bad......surely it will taste bad and most of the time, something that has all of the above, would definitely make you sick if you consume it. Always be on the safer side. :-)

My rule of thumb is that if I'm not sure, I get rid of it. I figure if I haven't used it yet, and I don't know when I am going to, who knows if I ever will. Of course, that seems somewhat wasteful, so I recently bought one of those food vacuum thingies at Target, and I've been pretty good about label what it is and the date. It's supposed to make frozen food last much longer, too.
