99 times out of 100 it's a bluff. But you never can tell. Suicide is a popular concept. It is addictive.
What you need to do is ...
1. Make is clear that if he continues to make this threat you will call the authorities and have him put under a 72 hr. observation arrest.
2. Make it clear that you do not want to be in any kind of a relationship with him.
3. STOP talking to him. STOP everything with regards to him. He is going to be like a stray cat at your back door. If you feed him he will return, and return. Even after you stop feeding him he will return for several more nights, but eventually he will get the hint and leave. If you think, well I'll just feed him a little less and a little less and he will get the hint.... HE WON'T!!! Just cut all ties and let it go. It is the kindest thing you can do in the long run. It is more cruel to him if you continue talking to him from this point on.
I hope this helps.

go to the police. No one should threaten you, and if they are threatening you by trying to make you responsible for what they do to themselves then they are not stable and need help.
You will most likely have to go the restraining order route, and yes it is a pain in the butt, but go by the book and do whatever the police tell you to do, if you don't they may be less likely to help you should the need ever arise. they get to many people who like to be in the middle of DRAMA and use the police to help make the drama as big as it can be. This wastes the polices time, and unfortunately it can make the police less then sensitive to real people in need of help because they see so many people "playing" at needing help too often.

Is this the first time he displayed this kind of behavior? If he has mental health issues then maybe it would be a good idea to talk to someone that can give you an idea how to handle him. Maybe someone that knows him and his behavior. what about his family? Is there someone you can talk with that can give you the low down on the kind of person he truly is? I wouldn't take this too lightly, especially if he is unstable. Lots of luck to you!

VERY CAREFULLY! Those are the types who become stalkers. Distance yourself as much as possible and if he doesn't let you go, see about a restraining order, you may have to take legal means to get away from him. I wish you luck....
Also............ start documenting everything he does to you. The more of a "paper trail" you have the easier it will be if you have to go to the police for help.

You have to just be firm in your decision. I would tell one of his friends or family members about his behavior,he needs some help. You can't be held responsible for his actions.

tell him not to call you or see you and if he does it again you will get a restraining order out on him. that really is the only thing you can do if he wont get the point.
