I was stationed on 3 nuclear powered subs. I never met a gay guy on a submarine, not to say that there wasn't any, just that they never came out in public and said "Hey, I am a pole smoker" or "Hey, I am the rump ranger" or some other such nonsense. The Navy works hard at physical and psychological screening during submarine training (which is prior to your reporting onboard your first boat) to weed out the malcontents, weirdos, and those just not able to stand the confinement.
I am NOT gay. My girlfriend and I just had some fun together, so get THAT thought out of your pointy little head.
Submarines are small vessels. There is no privacy. None. Seperate bathrooms (or heads as they call them in the Nav) as well as seperate berthing facilities would be required. A submarine would have to be designed and THEN built to accomodate a co-ed crew. Todays boats do not have the room or the capacity for a mixed sex crew.
Finally the topper. This issue no one else has brought up: Ionizing radiation from the nuclear reactor. The Navy will not place a female in the vicinity of an operating nuclear reactor for fear of damage to her reproductive system or her unborn fetus should she know (or not know) that she is pregnant.
Now, you have the WHOLE story.

Temptation of the men and no proper facilities. Basically you would need to have a sub that is completely refitted with new "bathroom" facilities, and a bunch of women that don't have their periods.
I have been wanting to go on a sub but sadly I can't, due to the fact I'm female, I want to go just to say I've done it.
And you are right, some of the guys on subs are gay but alot of them are perfectly straight.

Lucy, let me 'plain this to yous.
Close quarters is bad enough for a group of men.
Now you add one female and you will get harassment, sexual harassment, sexual favors, not focusing on a job or mission.
The male is naturally overprotective of the female. Well, you have a Chief Petty Officer and an Ensign, who is more protective without risking the submarine?
