When you say old fashion do you have irons or woods. The woods are refinished. Do not scrub the woods if they are chipping have them repaired. Make sure they are worth it first.
You can always find out how much they are worth on the PGA trade in website. The link is on my 360 blog roll if you need it

For irons, use soap water and a small brush (old tooth brush),
If possible try not to soak it in the water for too long. Water will damage the adhesive in the head joint and the logo/sticker usually found behind the club face. If water is trapped, the tip of steel shafts will corrode.

After the wet cleaning, wipe dry. Protect the head, or steel shaft by polishing with Brasso or AutoSol. These can give shine to the chrome parts and prevent rusting.

But, I do not advise applying the polish on metallic section which has matte surface finish. Sometimes will result in tarnish on the matte surfaces.

Hope it helps.
