Your bone marrow is a blood cell factory that makes red blood cells, white blood cells (neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes), and megakaryocytes. Megakaryocytes produce little bitty cells called platelets. These cells will aggregate and form a platelet plug to help blood clotting, which is good. They also adhere to the site of vascular damage and plaque which can make the plaque bigger and is not good. If you have polycythemia vera you may be making more of all the cells produced by the bone marrow not just RBCs. Because of the platelets ability to form clots, your doctor may advise an antiplatelet drug like aspirin or plavix.

Platlets are part of the plasma that helps clot blood. Polycythemia is an excessive amount of red blood cells. The problem with polycethemia is that it makes the blood sluggish, or thick the heart has to work over time to push it thought the body. Sometimes your platelet count will be low because the bone marrow is too busy making red cells to make white cells or plasma.
