The important thing to remember is that those numbers are only BASE pay. Back in the States, when we lived off-post, we got nearly $2400 a month, even after allotments. Without our allotments, it would have been around $2600-2700. That was nearly two years ago, and my husband had only been in two years. Now, we'd be making more, but we live on-post, and we still have allotments, lol, though they are different ones.
It's not GREAT money, but it's enough to live on. We live modestly, but we have what we need, and we can even buy movies, video games (for him AND me), and CD's (for me, lol) if we do so in moderation.
Is it worth it? Yeah, except for if he has to go down range. Then, NO amount of money is worth it.
Edit: It's certainly a lot better than it was when my dad was in, throughout the 60s: He and my mom were paid $200 a month. And when he was stationed in Germany, it took over nine months for my mom to be able to join him (because they didn't give lower enlisted housing automatically back then, so he had to find a place off-post) AND she had to pay for a ticket to fly over there.
Right now, my husband and I are in Germany. We received concurrent travel, the military paid for our tickets, and they put us up in a hotel until we were able to get housing.
It's a lot better now.

Absolutley not!! My husband is an E-4 in the Navy and we don't have any children and are struggling just to pay our bills. Forget going out to a movie and dinner on the weekends. The military really needs to start paying more it's kind of sad that the men and woman with the hardest most stressful jobs make such crap money!

Why are you starting at E-5?!?
We make jack crap for pay as E-4's and we're the ones who are most likely to die. Main reason, because ignorant E-5's and up have their heads up their rumps! You can't make E-5 in 4 years anymore anyways... or did you NOT see what happened last round to potential Promotions?
Some people had near perfect scores on PFE and 4 years was simply not enough points for time in service. HEY all you in charge, how about you start NOTICING how much worse its getting for the men your responsible for instead of being completely self centered!!
CURT - there are a lot of Military with children who can't pay there bills, you friends must all be high rank or bachelors!

You're listing base pay. There are many more (non-taxable) entitlements that we receive. It definitely doesn't make us rich; but one can live on it.
But if you (and the majority who responded to this) really think that our pay is too low, give us a raise. You are our bosses. Write your Congressman/woman and Senator to demand a pay raise. Get enough signatures on your petition and we'll get paid more.
You could do this and say you made a difference; or you could just talk about it in this forum and then forget about us. It's your choice.

Military pay is not sufficient, though your examples are poor ones. Half of all military personnel are making less than that E-5.
And as for taking money away from public school teachers, I say hell no!! They're another underpaid segment of society. What we ought to do is oppose tax cuts so we can pay our government employees (military, police, teachers, etc) a reasonable wage!

It CAN be done......we are Military...just us, no kids. We have pets, so there is that expense. We have lived on LESS than what an E-1 makes in the Single Rate.....All the families has to do is BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET! I don't understand HOW Military Families feel that they 'must' be on WIC or get assistance financially. I really don't!

base pay is not but we also recive a housing allowance and a food allowance. + on deployment add family seperation, hazardus duty, as well as a few other sepcial pays. truth is im an airman and of corse my pay sucks but i can raise a family and still be comfortable if we just watch what we spend.
saving is earning

I have never met anyone in the military was having trouble with their bills. The reward for being in the military is not the money.
What better job can you get without a college degree?
