Any vets on here?
can you give them human medicine for this? obviously at smaller doses.
i know all the chicken and rice and starve techniques but was thinking that there must be somthing better to give them than the johnsons tablets, as i have found these not to work.

You can give kaopectate, or pepto bismol. K is better. Basically give a childs dose or rule of thumb is about as much as you can get in them because they hate it. This is for diarrhea only. Do not give if vomiting. NO food for 24 hrs. Then as you know chicken and rice. If diarrhea continues see your vet. If this is a puppy please see your vet asap. ESPECIALLY if it starts vomiting.

The traditional home remedy is a teaspoon of Arrowroot in a cup, mix to a thin cream with a 50/50 mix milk and water and give him that to drink 2 or 3 times a day. Its safe for very young animals.
Arrowroot safely binds them up, but be careful because it masks the symptoms, not cures the cause. If the upset stomach is a 48 hour bug or similar it can help to control the dehydration.
You get arrowroot from the baking section of the supermarket, don't subetitute cornflour as it irritates the bowel instead of soothing it

Withhold his food for 12 to 24 hours to rest the gut and give his intestines( which are probably inflamed) time to heal. If there is nothing in his intestines, there will be nothing to come out. Make sure that water is available at all times to keep him hydrated as on-going diarrhea can pull huge amounts of fluid from his body.
Mix " Pedialyte or Gatorade " with 50/50 plain water and offer it in his drinking bowl, this will help to rehydrate him and make up for the mineral loss besides fluids he loses from diarrhea.
You can also givem him " Pepto- Bismal or Kaopectate " but you may need help to restrain him to give it to him as most dogs don't like the taste. Or you can use a " turkey baster " to get it down him.
The dose for both of these remedies is about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per 5Lbs. of your dog's body weight. or 1 tablet per 15 Lbs. of body weight. Give this three times a day.
The loss of water from your dog's body should be watched, if he has a real watery diarrhea, dehydration most likely will occur, especially if he's not eating or drinking water and the diarrhea is frequent. If it's very frequent and very watery diarrhea, get him to the vet, stat.
Most diarrhea is caused by " garbage-out syndrome " ( when he eats something he shouldn't.) But also it could be a sign of " distemper " or " parvovirus " along with diarrhea he would be vomiting and he would have a fever. But your dog is probaly just suffering from a cold or stomach upset. Not too worry, just keep an eye on him and if he starts vomiting get him to a vet.

I am not a vet, I am resident in Australia. Whilst travelling in The Outback, our Pug cross suffered a bout of sickness & Diarrhoea caused I think by eating an ancient pie bought in a remote roadhouse. In the absense of a vet we found a small chemist shop and the pharmacist recommended a Kaolin mixture(Kaomagna) It used to be called Kaoline and Morphine in the old days, but the morphine has now been removed for obvious reasons. He assured us he could drink the whole bottle without toxic effect. Along with no food for 24hrs and trying to keep his fluids up it worked a treat and he was fine within 24hrs.

If you know that it is just an upset tummy or new food or something,a baked potato smashed up with a small bit of tuna water(not oil) or some cooked chicken breast will help quite a bit. There is an excellent product available over the counter called biosol, which is neomycin,an antibiotic that stays in the gut coating it an drying some of the excess liquid there. The vet is always first choice if you dont know the cause of the problem, but these 2 things can help greatly.Good luck!

Yes. Occasional bouts of diarrhea in dogs may be cured by use of an over-the-counter medicine such as Imodium or Pepto Bismol. But cases that last more than a day or two or that escalate in severity should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Persistent diarrhea can lead to dehydration and other complications, and delay in treatment can impede a return to good health or hinder treatment of a serious condition.

Absolutely...my VET recommends using Pepto or Kaopectate
UNFLAVORED for bouts of diarreha...as long as you know
that this is not a medical emergency..and actually its usually
a higher dose...important to withhold ALL food for 24 hours..
you must allow the stomach and intestinal tract to settle down.

Vets will often recommend giving them plain yogurt based on their weight for general diarhea. It replaces the good bacteria in their system same as in humans.

Just went through two bouts of diarrhea with our one Shi Tzu of 12 years. Seems that dogs are allergic or sensitive to some food coloring compunds, just like people!!
So, toss the green and red colored doggy treats!!! Especially those cute little biscuits that look like teensy hot dogs!
She is much better now. But, yes, we called the VET!!! Recommendation was to try two ccs to 4 ccs of pink liquid...
in an eyedropper, dripped into her throat,
think it helped, but, better we toss the red dyed and green colored cookie treats!

I had a very small dog and my vet recommended giving her kaopectate. The key is, you have to give the correct dose and that would have to come from your vet.
