A mutual understanding means that two people agree to some thing that benefits them both that they won't talk about with other people, an agreement that is not exactly the best conditions for either. --sort of like mutual blackmail--- like: iwon't tell any one you were stealing money as long as you don't tell any one i was high on crack.

What this term has to do with liking some one i have no idea-- nor do your siblings i think-- another example of people using slang terms that they don't know what they mean.
--what they might mean to say is mutually exclusive, which means you agree to only go out with each other, ask them and they will tell you i am wrong.

Mutual understanding is a term being used many times when both sides are in consent with the other actions.
It could be open marriage were both dating others or it could be certain actions were you behave in a certain way that is accepted by your partner or it is a business deal were both sides got to mutual understanding regarding the terms of the deal being signed.
