Risperidone works by interacting with the seratonin and dopamine receptors in the brain. It is believed that activation of these receptors are the cause of psychotic behavior and severe mood changes. By blocking these receptor, theses symptoms are decreased. it is also thought that these receptors are responsible for appetite control in the brain.
There are some new antipsychotics (like Ambilify) that have less appetite affect- ask your psychiatrist or mental health worker who prescribed these medications about alternatives if wt gain is a significant problem.

good thing though, you should lose the weight when or if ever the risperdal is discontinued
