Contact your local NAMI (national alliance of mental illness)
They can refer you to support groups. Just keep in mind, you can't make someone get help. You will need to get support to if this is a close family member. There are also some great on line message boards for non bipolar and people with bipolar disorder.

You live in america yes? I can answer from a uk point of view if it helps. My mother has bi-polar. When she is manic she wont go into hospital voluntarily. We ring the mental health team and they section her. Or you can ring the police. Sounds drastic but its just perfuntuary. Remember they are not themselves. It makes you realise beahiour cannot be what constitutes a person. If your family member is not that bad yet explain to them how dangerous the illness is, how much it can ruin relationships (only close friends and family will stick it as it gets worse). They should get as much help as possible NOW- just leaving it will make it worse as it is a degenerative illness. Explain (when they are not high or depressed) how if they wont do it for themselves how selfish they are being towards the family

There are some legal things that could be done but are very difficult. The rights of the mentally ill must be protected. All too many times they end up in jail. Do check with your local community mental health agency. I wish you and your relative well.

you may want to check with the mental health department in your state. if they are a threat to themselves or someone else them may take them involuntarily, otherwise, i dont think there is much you can do. however, my mother is also bipolar and we just took her to the hospital and let the doctors talk to her and they convinced her to check herself in.
