PEKINS ARE THE BEST!
No question, I have to say the best duck is a Pekin!! The Pekin is the white duck with orange beak and orange feet that looks like Donald Duck or AFLAC.
A Pekin was left near my pond last year and she followed me home so I took her in. She has proven to be a part of the family and the best "odd" pet I have ever had. She is full of personality and is not afraid of the Canadian Geese or Mallards. She is sweet and smart and lays an egg each morning (non-fertilized so you can eat them).
It's nice to have her inside with the family, so I got a special diaper harness which holds half an infant diaper and fits on like overalls. This is a must because ducks poop ALOT and cannot be trained in any way because they lack a sphincter muscle for control. She doesn't mind wearing it and will even help me to put it on her and then readjust it by pulling it with her beak if she doesn't like the way I did it. Yes, you do have to change every few hours or less like a baby and let her wash herself in pool, but I don't find it a problem.
Very notable is her cleanliness. She has a pool of her own outside and does not hesitate to use it. I have never had to clean or bathe her and she is spotless. Females (hens) quack more and louder than males (drakes), but not annoyingling so. You have to be very careful about where they wander and where they are kept, especially at night because they cannot fly and are easy prey for animals.
Best advice? Raise it from a chick so it will "imprint" on you. Imprinting is an inherent trait in geese and especially strong in ducks to identify with the first thing it sees when hatching from an egg. Whatever it sees, it will think that it is that "kind" of thing, and that the thing it sees is his "mother". If it sees other ducks and geese, it will most likely hang and identify with them. If it sees a human, its a human. If it sees you, in particular, it will develop a very strong bond and you WILL be it's mother.
Also be aware of the amazing growth rate. A chick will grow to a mature size in about 8 weeks or so and can live 15 years, so be sure you really want one. It will break your heart to have to give her away.
