Buy your self a good backpack- don't cheap out on this- your going to need it to last you all summer.

forget souvenirs- just take alot of pics and keep a journal. write in it everyday- a few months after your trip you'll start to forget stuff but that journal is priceless....bring tape and take receipts, cards leaves, whatever you find or buy and wanna keep in there.
