I attended American Bartending School in Tampa, FL. I'm very successful at bartending & worked as a lead bartender for a high-volume nightclub before I went freelance. I couldn't have excelled like I did without the formal training. I can always tell when a bartender isn't certified--it's not just about knowing how to make drinks. School teaches you about ethics, etiquette, marketing, science, etc. I paid just over $600 for a 40-hour course. I quickly regained the money soon after starting my first bartending job. Plus they offer lifetime job placement.

It's so not worth it. I've never met a bartender that attended one of these schools who were worth his salt. The last one I encountered, when asked to make a frozen daquiri made it not only on the rocks but also messed up the ingrediants! You're better off faking your way into the bar business. Or finding a great bar and grill and working your way up. BTW, real bartenders look upon those who go to these schools as chumps!

I did..and it was worth it for me...A 2 week class taught all the basics and had a placement program. I Bartended for.... oh gosh..about 20 yrs..in some real nice restaurants where-ever I've lived. I don't remember the cost, but it was reasonable. But be carefull there are ripoff "institutes" out there.
