when we were told my mother was dieing and giving a time frame in the same breath of that. we were asked if we wanted an autopsy. not in the right frame of mind, we said no.now we wish we had said yes.

Did you suspect her death was a result of foul play? Then yes, you should have requested one. Otherwise, there would have been no reason for one.

If there is an unknown cause of death or you feel something is amiss then do request an autopsy. If you change your mind you can withdraw permission. I'm any case I am truly sorry for the pain you are suffering right now. An autopsy is like 20 20 hindsight it still cant bring back your precious mother

An autopsy is performed by an ME (Medical Examiner) to determine cause of death. I don't understand why they would ask you that unless your relative was dying of something her doctors could not identify. Very confused...need more information.
Some people request it when they know they are going to die. Maybe your relative requested it.

I know why you wish you had said yes, cause there was a life insurance policy and now they wont pay up wright, Same thing happened to my aunt when my uncle passed.

Your doctor seems to have done the right thing. It's a hard thing for him /her to do too. Sometimes an autopsy will help, sometimes it won't. It may show cause of death...

Chances are they would have pushed for it themselves if they thought there was something unusual. So you probably did the right thing in saying no. However, they probably should not have asked you the question at the same time as they gave you the information
