I sometimes am shocked by all the things that I "believe or claim" when I have never made such a claim. The Communist party everywhere is an Atheist organization. Russia the country is a highly religious country. Most of the people there are devout christians.. Ok christians, who is saying such things about Russia? Jim

I'm a Christian and I never made such an accusation. I was given a book about Russia as a gift from an exchange camper. She was a Christian and the book had beautiful pictures of Russian culture - including Cathedrals. She attended church while here in America and shared her ways of worship with us. It was a great experience.

The official cummunist party line was that of atheism. They would not allow faith or anything else to interfere with their rule. Some goverments use faith as a tool, some do not. The former Soviet union had very heavy percentages of chritian orthodox followers, but it was officially forbidden. I've known many missionaries that went secretly to the soviet block to give out bibles to the people in secret. BUT, those days are done...

First, you need to know the difference between Russia and the USSR.

Second, you need to know that until 1991, religion was suppressed.

Third, the country for most of the 20th century was officially atheist.

You must be young. Under communism , this was not so. I have a Russian Jew working for me. She said she was a Jew but didn't know much about her religion. They weren't allowed to teach children until age 18.People had Atheist cards to work. Communist party cards, without them , there was very little you could do without them.

It looks like we're becoming them and they are becoming us.

actually I'm non-religious (unless you count FSM), and I've never heard that accusation.

all i've ever heard was that atheism was the "official" stand of the Kremlin during the Soviet era, not the actual people during any era

and I never understood that either, Communism and religion seem to have much in common, they both want control of the masses. you'd think they would have complimented each other, but perhaps it was too much competition between the two.

Stalin was studying to be a priest when he got kicked out of the seminary. When he came into power he suppressed religious ideas because of what happened to him. Contary to what many people think Stalin was never anti-religious. As long as the churches followed the communist ideals and did not oppose him, they were allowed to practice. Many of the so-called communists were practicing Catholics. Soviet Union was not a godless state. It was a propaganda spread by the Western powers following the policy of "spread lies and mis-information to dehumanize the enemy so it is easy for the common populace to hate them".

And these stats are from when????? I heard recently that the government there in Russia is using Christians as examples for work ethics for the people. Thanks for bringing this out. You have done well. And even in China they have Christianity but it's monitored by the government.

Because, unfortunately, since about the 1950's, our fellow citizens like to be "popular", and to be overheard saying the "right thing". I think it comes from the days of McCarthyism, and the "threat of godless communism".
