It really depends on what part of the country you're visiting. For example, I'm from Wisconsin, so you'd have to have brats boiled in beer and onions, then grilled, served on a bun. (Brats are a kind of sausage.) Wisconsin also claims to be the birthplace of the hamburger, but they're pretty universal. No matter where you visit, you can grab a burger while you're here. If you're visiting Chicago, Illinois, you'd need to try a Chicago-style deep dish pizza. In the New England states you'll find Clam Chowder and other fresh seafoods. Boston, Massachussets is the home of the Boston Baked Beans. In the deep South, try Cajun or Creole foods like Jambalaya, Gumbo, or crawfish. Fried chicken is also classic, as are hushpuppies (cornmeal, not dogs), but avoid the chitlins ("chitterlings") - it's pig intestines. Out west you'll see more beef, and in the southwest it leans toward Mexican influenced foods. California is a land unto itself, so in the north you'll find a lot of seafoods like crab and salmon. Further south there's more of a Mexican influence. In between, you'll find a lot of Asian inspired foods.

Then there's barbecue. In the US that isn't the method of cooking, it's the food produced. Barbecue varies by region, so the BBQ you get in Texas tastes nothing like what you'd get in Kansas City, Missouri, which is completely different from the barbecue in Memphis, Tennessee. The differences are in type and cut of meat, relative sweetness and vinegar content, and the cooking process.

Chili is also a regional dish - everyone makes it, but nobody makes it the same way. Cincinnati style chili is a must if you make it to Ohio, but it's served over spaghetti with onions, beans, and cheese. In Texas, chili is deeper and spicier.

You must try...
chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and cream gravy,
Macaroni and Cheese, fried baloney sandwiches, anything that Elvis ate, basically anything cooked in bacon grease (try cooking your green beans in it!), or any other kind of grease

Southerners do it best!

if it ain't fried it ain't american baby
