WAIT, WAIT, WAIT!!! There's really no such thing as an outdated shotgun shell, but depending on actually how old they are (and if they are in their original box) they can be QUITE valuable. Take them to a gun show and there's usually a guy or two that just deals in vintage ammo and boxes. I've seen that stuff go for way more than you'd think. If you don't want to then give them to someone anyway, whatever you do don't just get rid of them.

Immerse them in WD-40, available at any Wal-Mart or hardware store, for a few days. The solution will seep its way around the packing and the primer and render it inert. You can also split the crimp on the front and remove all of the contents and leave only the primer, which is harmless to expend in any shotgun. I agree with one of the previous posters that the ammo could be valuable, depending on its age and type. If the brass portion is not corroded and the cases split, then it should be safe to shoot.

The chamber, it is on the rear end of the barrel, is the determining ingredient. the dimensions would be stamped on the barrel. a three" shell will extra healthful right into a 2 3/4 inch chamber even though it fairly is not secure to hearth it. The chambers are made somewhat longer than the mentioned length to allow room for the crimp (the folded section on the front of the shell) to unfold. Firing a shell it is in simple terms too long for the chamber will go away no room for the crimp to unfold through fact the shell fires. this could convey approximately unsafe chamber pressures and particular break the gun. there is likewise a severe risk of severe harm to the shooter and any bystanders!!!

If these are "Paper Hulls" put them in wd40 or soak them in oil for a long peroid.
For plastic hulls purchase a "shell cutter" cheap and will "part off"
a shell at the head.
Dispose of the powder safely and squirt wd40 at the primer in the head.
It is a common tool that people who "Reload" shotgun ammo
have on their bench.

there's no expiration on shotgun shells!
If you want to safely dispose of them soak them in water, although the plastic casing will probably prevent them from getting wet. take them down to the local cop shop I'm sure they will take them off your hands

Aslong as the ammo was properly stored and sealed, there is no such thing as outdated ammunition. People still shoot army surplus ammunition that is older than 1935.
