This has been ansered many times before. Free programs - spybot and adawareSE (from lavasoft corp) for adware and some spyware. Zonealarm as a firewall. Spysweeper from webroot cost about $30.00. Avoid anything that pops up telling you that you have spyware as you can get suckered into buying stuff you do not need.

Most of the above software mentioned are pretty good. You may also want to try to try this all inclusive free scan that checks for viruses, spyware and adware: http://www.fixieonline.com/freescan.html

If you go to

www.2cows.com

there are many programs that do so and the ones who got 5 stars are the best. Many times the best are either shareware or you need to pay, however at times even a very small freeware program does the same job and it is free. Check this site out.
Good luck

I have AdAware and it's great. Microsoft also has one. Or, if you want a choice, logon to www.100downloads.com
