Believe it or not, I joined the army infantry a yera and a half before Pearl Harbor, I was there during the attack. I came back and was sent to Europe where I fought all the way into Czechoslovakia, and stayed there for another year and a half as liaison officer.
I can't tell you the date of D-day. Somehow exact dates don't seem that important to me. So if I don't know it, I can understand others not knowing it.

By the time the invasion of Normany happened in June, 1944, the fate of World War II was already largely decided. The Germans were already on their knees, having been thoroughly hammered by the Russians on the Eastern Front.

Schools have done a very poor job of teaching history or critical thinking to todays youth. Thus we end up with the bunch of ignorant morons I've seen on yahoo answers not everyone but a hefty percentage. I've no realistic hope that this will change soon unfortunately.

My father was in the first wave of boats that landed on Normandy.

I can tell you how he described it, the feeling when his first landing boat was hit, and he was pulled from the water and send back on another boat. I can tell you how he described the smell of the artillery, and the sound, and feel of the sand.

But I have to look up the actual date. The dates and numbers are meaningless, except for school exams. We don't learn history from the dates. We learn it from the lessons and the concepts.

If you weren't alive when it happened it's hard to remember the exact date because it becomes something you have to memorize. I have a hard time remembering my friends birth dates so I write it down.

I think it's more important to know that it happened and remember the event and what it means than the actual date.

Because the vets are dying off, sadly enough, along with those who were alive that day. Because the young people are spoiled brats who don't care about history. Because it was 60 years ago, and how easily we forget...
