We're at the day and age where women are just as able and successful as men in the workplace. So why do men still have to symbolically "buy" their wife's hand in marriage, and not vice versa?

For those women telling me It's how it is, and always SHOULD be.... I wonder if those women are against prostitution.
Because the whole tradition reeks of the same smell. wafts of it...
"Sniff-sniff... is that prostitution, or did someone just get engaged?"

Some people buy their rings together as a couple. Some people don't even wear rings.
Then, why it is bride's parents who have to take care of the wedding? (Again, not everybody's like that. SOme families share the expences.)
OK, a ring should not be a major expence on your grand scale of things if you want to support a family. It it seems too expensive to buy a ring - just forget thet whole thing. You're not ready financially to get married.
In the country of my origin people exchange rings. They buy them for each other.

Usually, by the time the guy gets up the nerve to ask a woman to marry him, she's already thought about marriage and talked about it with all her girlfriends and female family members. Although I agree that it's the 21st century, and gender barriers (one would think) would be broken down more, guys are still usually the last one in the relationship to want to commit, so the girls wait around for the guys to finally commit.

You know - that's a really good question you have asked and I guess it stems back from the older days when women weren't as independent.
I think it's a great idea - women should have the right to offer a ring if they choose to.

I don't know, we decided to save one tradition, and even though a woman can propose to a man, the man buys the ring 'cause I for one would like to be showered in gifts.
