Black spots are usually bruises which are caused by rough handling. One type of bruising happens when the skin is broken. The potato forms a thicker layer of skin to protect and/or heal the wound.
The second type of bruising shows up just under the skin or deeper inside the potato as a blackspot. This happens when potatoes are dropped more than six inches or something heavy is placed on top of them.
Handle potatoes gently they bruise easily. Store in a cool, dark place. Remove any blackspots before cooking.
Organic potatoes are grown in a more controlled environment and therefore harvested "a little gentler" without the bulky machinery that the traditional product is harvested with.

All potatoes potentially have black marks under the skin. It depends on the age of the potato and quality. With the organic potatoes, they have been selected...the other potatoes have been harvested and just put in a bag.
Just cut the black marks out and you will be fine.

Recipe books say that it is from being frozen.
I think they mean by accident.
Potatoes can be frozen - you just shouldn't do it!
I agree with the comment that organic ones are probably treated more carefully.
I also notice that the black spots only happen at certain times, not all year round.

The skins have preservatives sprayed on them that stop the skins going black, but it doesn't stop the insides.
Organic don't have preservatives so if they go black then the shop keeper throws them out before you see them.
(they werent frozen as one person said, you cant freeze raw potatoes)

Maybe you are buying grade B potatoes instead of Grade A which is a higher quality.

I also thought it was where they have been bruised. It is normally darker on the skin so you know where to peel deeper to get it out.

I agree with Sami they were probably frozen or refrigerated and then put out in the store at room temp.
