666 was described by the prophet Daniel. It is a number that was derived directly from Babylonian worship practices. The people of Babylon, alongside the trend set forth by many cultures before them, worshipped a number of gods. The number of them was precisely 37. One, the god of the sun, was the supreme ruler of the other gods. Without him in the total of gods, the number of lesser gods stood at 36.

Babylonians believed in the power of numbers and decided a system that would allow them to control their gods. To do this, they added a numerical value to each of the gods so as to strip them of their "power." The numbers were 1-36. When added together, you see where 666 comes from:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 12 + 13 + 14 + 15 + 16 + 17 + 18 + 19 + 20 + 21 + 22 + 23 + 24 + 25 + 26 + 27 + 28 + 29 + 30 + 31 + 32 + 33 + 34 + 35 + 36 = 666

Recently, archaoelogical discoveries unearthed Babylonian amulets that were matrix-like (6x6) and had the numbers of the gods on them. Each row had a total of 111. 6 rows x 111= 666.

This is the origin of the number. Now, when Christianity moved through the area and converted everyone almost overnight, some Babylonian practices attached themselves to the religion. It is believed that these attached practices will eventually corrupt the daughters of the church and will transform them into the figure shown in Revelations. There is a figure termed "The Great Harlot" or "The Whore of Babylon", who bears the mark of the beast.

It is believed that through Babylonian infiltration, the church's daughters will become corrupt and will fall to the beast. They will turn into the Great Harlot. She is of Babylon, carries the numbers 666, and bears the mark of the beast. BAM! There's the connection.

33 The wild beast has a name, and this name is a number: 666. Six, as a number, is associated with Jehovah’s enemies. A Philistine man of the Rephaim was of “extraordinary size,” and his “fingers and toes were in sixes.” (1 Chronicles 20:6.) King Nebuchadnezzar erected a golden image 6 cubits in breadth and 60 cubits high, to unify his political officials in one worship. When God’s servants refused to worship the image of gold, the king had them thrown into a fiery furnace. (Daniel 3:1-23.) The number six falls short of seven, which stands for completeness from God’s standpoint. Therefore, a triple six represents gross imperfection.

A name identifies a person. So how does this number identify the beast? John says that it “is a man’s number,” not that of a spirit person, so the name helps to confirm that the wild beast is earthly, symbolizing human government. Just as six fails to measure up to seven, so 666—six to the third degree—is a fitting name for the world’s gigantic political system that fails so miserably to measure up to God’s standard of perfection. The world’s political wild beast rules supreme under the name-number 666, while big politics, big religion, and big business keep that wild beast functioning as an oppressor of mankind and a persecutor of God’s people.

While Satan and the Devil are Major players in Revelation, the meaning of 666 was clear to the people of the time. In both Greek and Hebrew, letters doubled as numerals. One simple solution to the 666 puzzle is that the number is produced by adding up the Hebrew equivalent of "Kaisar Neron" or Emperor Nero. Rome, the "Great Whore Babylon" of Revelation, and its butchering evil emperors, were the real villains for the author of Revelation.

Numbers in the Bible are basically symbolic. The number 7 has been given the meaning of "perfection" "completion" and so on...the number of God.

The number 6 is less than that. Literally...and denotes "imperfection" to be incomplete...the number of man rather than God.

All the numbers in the Book of Revelation are actually symbols or signs telling something else. These numbers cannot be taken as literal. Like the 144,000..... this is 12,000 people times the 12 tribes of Israel. Doesn't it make more sense that the number 12 is simply telling us something. It means more than just "12".

Same reason Black is the colour of the devil.. Because An Individual put meaning to them!

666 means six hundred and sixty six to me, and the colour black means the same as the colour pink to me.. just that.. a colour!

It's the number of man. Numerology. Odd how that is viewed as "witchcraft" now, yet is leaned on when it's written in the Bible.

there isn't a reason stated in revelations. But it does present a challenge for "those who have understanding". So aparently John did know the answer to your question either.
