does it backfire, and do you find that people begin to undermine your opinion or alleged experiences - stating that you are just thinking wrong and they 'didn't really happen that way?

In other words, now that they understand you are ill,' have you completely lost any hope of 'credibility' with people? Has this ever happend to you, because of stigma, misundertandings, etc?

ive been there, personally depression is something that never truely goes away, you can get better but its something everyone has whether they admit it or not, some people just have a harder time dealing with it and that was me, i delt with people who just did not understand what i was going through and they thought i was just looking for attention, then again there were others that came forward and helped me a lot by showing they had the same problems, your family and true freinds will help you the most, the most important step to dealing is admitting the problem, just dont give up because some prics out there dont understand, hope this helps

Hate that stigma crap..but it does exsist...seems that some people have better skills in dealing with anothers mental illness..and some really suck at understanding..those people you will write out of your life..who needs the hassle? The ones who "get it" will be invaluable...and those who have personal experience will be God Sends...and believe me, those good ones are all over the place...it can be very liberating to find people to share this illness with...and from that liberation grows strength

good luck

Short-term depression is normal and experienced by most human beings. Long-term, however, requires professional help since the ones that love you will be affected negatively by it. However, try to stay away from the pills but if you must, make it really short-term.

If the people really understand the problem it will not be a problem. Your friends and loved ones will be happy for you and will understand what happened in the past was not your fault. Take your melds and show them your true self. and your true friends and family will rally to your support.
Yes I was there.
