Be careful using cuttlebone and cardboard. There may be a small amount of lead in cardboard and cuttlebone can break off into small shards that can damage the birds digestive system and what not.

Google "Birds Just Want to Have Fun" and "Drs Foster and Smith". They have bird toys. I think "Planet Fun Toys" (or something like that)

Those are some excellent toy sites...especially the Planet Fun one. If you go to Petsmart, they sell the Planet Fun toys...they are palm leaf toys...cylindrical toys.

And depending on where you live, there are some stores that exclusively sell birds and bird toys.

I went to Pet Smart to get my cockatiels toys. They had this box with different types of string and rope, plastic toys, etc. My daughter had fun putting it together with me.

They also like the honey sticks with the seeds. Your best bet is to check out local pet stores. The staff are always really nice and helpful. They will advise you what will be best for your birds to keep them happy.

Just make sure that you do not get any toys with rings or that they can get their heads stuck in. I breed birds and a woman who bought one from me killed it a week later by putting a toy in its cage and it broke the birds neck. GOOD TOYS: I have to love birds and a Lorie. They like this little hut that I got them. It is like a triangle. Also get them calcium cubes that they can scratch their beak on.

Mirrors: Mirrors marketed for birds are small, get scratched easily and rust. I suggest mirrors for lockers - and they come with a magnet.

Plastic slinkys from a toy store. My birds use theirs horizontally. Instead of flying to the other side of the cage, they sometimes take the slinky.

Cardboard:
Paper towel tubes, even funner, wrapping paper tubes (watch for the empties at Xmas). My keets balance on top and crawl thru from one end to the other (several feet!) and eventually chew them to pieces.
Go to a liquor store and look for heavy box dividers - #

Broccoli: Unfortunately my keets do not like fruit and vegetables (except for known universal bird favs of pasta and corn), however they like to tear apart broccoli crowns and raw carrots firmly clipped to their cage. Who knows - they may even improve their diet in the process!

You can dye UNTREATED wood (like pine) with kool-aid, drill with a small drill, use cotton or hemp rope... Petsmart carries some toy making kits, which you could look at for ideas and then pick up the supplies cheaper at a craft store :-) Amazon.com carries the chain/clip sets for $1.99 I think (it has been a while).

My goffins like small whiffle balls! I put treats in the balls, tie short pieces of string thru the holes.... and then watch them destroy what I made :-)

Mine loved mirrors, cuddle bones, and anything with a bell. It might make a lot of noise, but they liked it.

you will have lots of fun to makeing your toys... just be careful not to use zink plated fasteners ...it only takes a small chip for your bird to eat and the results are NOT GOOD...!

Mine love to tear apart the cardboard toilet paper inserts. It is perfectly safe.
