A small kitten should not be away from its mom. She teaches it how to use the washroom and cleans it afterwards.

If it is very young, it may need help. If the mom isn't available, take a damp warm tissue or cotton ball and gently stroke over the urine and bowel openings, simulating a mother cat's tongue. You should only need to do this for a minute after each feeding.

I assume the kitten is young enough that you are needing to syringe or bottle feed it kitten formula? It is good that you thought of the elimination issue. Not everyone would. But, if the kitten is that young and you are caring for it yourself, it is a good idea to consult with a vet for further advice.

Here is a page with a lot of good links on caring for orphaned kittens: http://www.animalaide.org/resources/kittens.html

Good luck.

How old is the kitten? If it isn't able to walk yet and/or does not have it's eyes open it needs it's mom to help it go to the bathroom.

Not to sound too gross, but the momma cat has to lick it's bottom to make it go.

When we would find an abandoned kitten, we would just use a paper towel or toilet tissue to gently rub the area until it "pottied".

If it's an older, running around kitten, you don't have to worry about it. They know what to do.

If I were a momma cat, the FIRST thing I would teach my kittens is to go to the bathroom AWAY (far) from me.

Kittens need help eliminating until they are about three weeks old. In abscence of a mother, you can stimulate them after feeding by gently massaging the urinary/rectal area with a damp, warm paper towel or cotton ball.

Of course... it will have to go to the toilet no matter what age. If it does not know how to use the litter box and in case the cat is outside, it will go potty outside.. the closest place to its mommy
