Ok our dog got spayed 5 days ago, and the stitches are bio-dagradabel?! the vet said they would go into the skin or come out when ready. We just went out to eat and she had 4 stitches, we just came back and now she has 3. she has definatly ripped one. she dosent want to lay down, keeps trying to lick herself, and the skin is sticking out more than its suppose to. she is going to the vet on tue. but we were wondering can she die if she has ripped one? i mean her whole stomach isnt hanging out, and it was only one stitch, but still. It dosent look very pretty. Can she get really hurt? Or will she be ok for another day. shes going in on tue morning early to go see them and she's resting right now in the laundry room.
anyway sry we are kind of freaked out and dont know what to do! thanks!

If the stitching is 5 days old and is suppose to dissolve with time. Don't worry. Just keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't lick it to much. You only need to have her checked by a Vet if it gets infected.

My dog did the same and I freaked too. To my surprise, when we got to the VET he did not stitched it back up. He said it would heal on it's own.

Even if they are 'biodegradable', they may not have been in enough time if she took one out...you know what...on this site you get all kinds of answers and as a person that actually DOES know a little bit about veterinary care and animal health, it scares the CRAP outta me what some people write as advice.

My advice to you is to go ahead and call your vet's emergency number. What will happen if he's not in is that they will page him and he will call you back at your home or number you leave for him. Then just ask him. My gut tells me that chances are that he's going to say just to wait until Tuesday if she only takes out the one and no further ones, and since it has been 5 days, but you know, it is so much better for you to call and make sure than to find out you should have and didn't. Plus it is just a phone call, he won't care and won't charge you anything for it, and it is the only foolproof way to know.

See, our cat did the same thing, and she did have to be re-stitched, as the stitches hadn't been in long enough. They also wrapped her around the middle with vet wrap so that she couldn't get to them again, but an E-collar would have worked so much more efficiently...

You can prevent her getting any further ones out on your own by going to PetSmart and picking up a correctly sized E-collar...(you can call ahead and make sure they have them) or you can do a web search on making your own and do that, too, but it would be way better just to buy one, they're cheap enough.

And go ahead and call that vet on his emergency number and just run it by him, that's what the number is there for and it is better to be safe than sorry...plus if she takes out more you could be in trouble.

call the vet, it depends entirely on how far apart the stitches are. I ripped a stitch out when I had surgery once, and the doctor sid to just put a bandaid on it, However, the scar iswider where thestitch ripped, and it took longer for it to heal over. Since she is in pain. I'd take my dog back to the vet.

Do not burn it with a cigarette.
Is she calm now? Is the wound (surgery cut) open, or just the stitch missing? Is anything oozing out of the cut?

If she is being calm, the wound, even if puckered, is not open, and nothing is oozing out, then it is quite likely that she will be fine until Tuesday a.m.

I would continue to keep a close eye on her.

Let her know I wished her "get well soon."

I am not a doc or anything, but I have had 3 dogs that had spay/neuter surgery and all of them ended up pulling out the stitches on their own. I never saw it, just realized when it was time to take them back tot he doc that they were gone. I called the doc and they said if the wound had healed shut and was not open it was fine.

It's hard to answer this without seeing it, but you don't need to worry about her having eaten a stitch. But please don't let her lick it. That's why vets offices give out elizabethan collars for dogs who have stitches - so they can't reach them. If it seems ok, you can leave it until she goes to the vet but you need to keep a close eye on it to make sure there's no infection starting. Do you have anitbiotic cream? If so, I would gently put a little on.

I've had more than one dog rip out a stitch and they were perfectly fine, but if you feel at all uneasy about this, you need to take her in. But please, don't let her lick it.

You really should not freak out by this. When the doc told you the sutures (stitches) were biodegradable, they meant the body will absorb them and the removal of them is not necessary.

As far as the licking goes, that is to be expected. Like when our cuts heal they become itchy. For animals licking alleviates the itchiness.

Next time you have a procedure done to your pet learn everything there is to know before doing it.

You should have been given one of those collors that dogs get when they are spayed or neutered.. Not getting one is faulty. The vet should have insisted that you have one JUST for the purpose of preventing the dog from ripping its stitches.
