I do believe this is a great deal of the source of anxiety and OCD, in many cases....it is almost like a predisposed fear of something bad that is going to happen to you...because you deserved it for what you did, or percieved you did,..and never got over it..

I have a lot of guilt about how I treated my two sisters while experiencing mental psychotic episodes and they having to take a back seat for my parents care and providing for me. They tell me that is nonsense but they left home for college ASAP after high school and caused my Mom and Dad great grief until they did. What is wrong with this picture? Honestly? Who knows. Until recently no one knew I had GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) and then they are treating me for that. I know exactly how your daughter feels. Is it possible she could volunteer someone a day or two part-time per week until she gets her feet wet? Or maybe financially it's not? Anyway that feeling is awful. The anxiety and not being able to do the right thing and work like everyone else does. What kind of therapist is this counselor? I think your daughter may feel more comfortable with a mental health counselor.

I do not believe that. I believe it stems from not feeling safe when younger. Or any other time a person hasn't felt safe. I have anxiety and OCD and I believe it is from not feeling safe or having been scared in some way. For example, if one has ever had a car accident, they will feel anxious driving again. Or, my Dad used to fall asleep smoking cigarettes and I can remember that fear of the house burning, so now I check everything before I go to sleep. Stove, light switches, etc.

Anxiety precipitates from undefined hurt, anger, fear or pity.
When you suppress your anger, when you shut down your hurt, when you hide your fear, and when you deny your pity, these actions cause anxiety. But...
hurt embarrasses you...
anger confronts you...
fear frightens you...
and pity? It's just too pathetic.
Nobody wants to see you expressing these emotions. So you stuff them down.
And who has time to 'process' them out, even if they knew how? It's so much easier to 'put them aside' or 'put it behind you' or to 'get over it'.But shuffling these emotions around so they can't be seen doesn't make them disappear.
They need to be dealt with. When you suppress or repress these four emotions, it creates many problems, not the least of which is anxiety.
If you don't release the pity, anger, hurt and fear that come up in the day-to-day living of your life, you will experience anxiety. Forever. Pills, vitaminds, herbs, drugs, etc. don't get rid of the anxiety, they only mask the symptoms.

I would have to say yes. The reason is simple, you don't want to make the same mistake or action again. It's like public speaking, either you just have anxiety because you don't want to be a fool or because of a past time when you did a bad speech and it made your reputation bad.

yes, it can. freud spoke about how the superego causes this to happen because it cannot accept the needs of the id, or that part of our psyche that wants what it wants immediately. it's like our animal drives (the id) and the superego helps us feel guilty about it. guilt then creates anxiety telling us we're not a good person and we feel upset and guilty unconsciously.
