Today at church the sermon had much to do with avoiding false prophets and deceptions. One specific desception the pastor mentioned was the polygamous church ... but what are other deceptions (so I know and won't let anyone deceive me). Thanks.

Anything that does not directly glorify God is deception.

There you were in the church.
Who were you listening to?
Was he a prophet?
The false prophets are not going to come on street corners, they are going to show up in the pulpits.
Who will appear as angels of light?
The pastors will.
People have been following these guys for a long time.
We had a problem in Salem Mass. a while back.
It was called the witch trials.
You see the false prophet was the pastor of the church ( puritan church ) and his side kick that he brought in.
They were the false prophets.
I use this example because I don't want anyone to think I go after the catholic church only.
How far back was that? A long ways.
It was warned by the Apostles that after they departed the creepers would come and they did.
And so the Lord Jesus was thrown out with the bath water.
Church is no good He is no good.
The way of the truth is maligned.
You have to read the New Testament for your self.
The Bible is the truth and how shall you know the truth unless you read it for yourself. I could go on---but that is enough.

Self deception is the most dangerous kind, and we all fall into it sometimes. A kind but honest friend can help you keep from fooling yourself.

Experience is helpful in figuring out when other people are deceiving you. If you are in doubt, ask someone you trust -- someone you think can separate the genuine people from the con artists. The experienced con artists (and I include some religious leaders in this category) are very good at what they do, so they are sometimes hard to spot. Generally they're after some kind of power -- over you, over money, over controlling others' behavior.

Good luck.

I would have to agreee with bimpster. Deceptions come in many forms. Most often in the form of mental justification. Satan infects your mind causing you to justify your sins. Whether it be lust, anger or lack of whole hearted commitment to Christ. Deceptions are also found in many false doctrines such as polygomy. Anything that is not directly supported by the Holy Bible can be considered false doctrine.

Wow that's a big list. Just off the top of my head these are the most dangerous I think
If you don't make alot of money buy lots of things then your a failure
If your a good person and try to live a good life but don't have Christ you will get to heaven any ways
the list can go on and on but I'm sure a lot of people will egg me if I continue.
God bless

The one that comes to my mind is the widely propagated deception that acquiring wealth, beauty, and social status will bring peace and satisfaction.

The advertising industry has known this since the beginning of time, and it seems to work on us. We need to see this for what it is, and make our judgments about what we can afford and what we need based on God's direction and not Madison Avenue.

don't let a church say you HAVE TO go to everything they tell you to attend to stay in with Christ. don't let them tell you who you can be friends with. don't let them tell you that if you don't do everything they say you are wrong. if they say you must read more new testament and less old testament they are way wrong. tithing is described differently you must read the whole chapter the person says to understand it, not just the few scriptures they point out. when people give you a scripture(meaning 1 in a book or chapter of meaning) read the whole section also around that one. people cant tell you one and neglect the rest in that chapter. that's like picking which law of god and Christ you want to follow and not what they say exactly in the bible. as a whole. the biggest issue is read the word, study the word with others , but also for yourself without the influence of others telling you how to interpret a scripture. let your heart and your prayers to god and the answers he gives you be your understanding of the scripture. its your personal walk with Christ that matters and not what people say should matter to you just because they believe that way and act like you should too or you are living wrong in Christ. you answer to Christ and not man. lord be with you in your walk and god bless you.

Religion.

Religion tends to deceive people, as it has been read, changed, and mistranslated throughout the ages. People interpret it their own way, and try to force it as the truth upon others.
