I am not talking about refusing medical assistance, or forced teen marriages, nor even female circumsion.

This is in response to some who say we should not have the right to raise our children according to our religious faith.

It is not abuse at all, the children growing in home with religious following are automatically get attracted themseleves without parents actually forcing them into religion.

As long as the Faith is not a dangerous cult, (no, all religions are not cults) there's nothing abusive about being raised in the church. Children have a natural inclination toward God, and want to learn about Him. Though I was raised in the church, there was a twenty year time period that I wasn't active in the church. My son (8 at the time I think) asked to be taken. My biggest regret is not raising my children in the church from a young age. To comment on some of the remarks about child abuse in the church--abuse happens EVERYWHERE. It isn't just churches. They get more press because it's a place where you don't expect it to happen, and it shouldn't. A responsible church, or any place who has reponsibility for children should have safeguards in place to protect children from anything like that happening.

No. Forcing them to stay in that religion is abuse. I think as long as u are OK with ur children making their own religious decisions when they are old enough it's ok. My parents are christian even though we went to church and stuff they always made it clear that religion is a very personal thing and no one, not even ur parents, can make that kind of life choice for u. At 14 i started questioning my faith, my parents gave me all the information about their religion and other religions and i made my own choice ,i am now an atheist, it doesn't bother my parents at all, i think they are sometimes a little worried, but they try not to show it. At the end of the day they are my parents and they will love, respect and support me no matter what my faith and that is more than anyone can ask for. It is ok to teach ur children ur religion as long as u give them the choice to figure things out for themselves.

Only people who consider having faith in any form of spirituality, ie athiests/agnostics, would consider this abusive. They reject the idea of knowing such things at all (or positively) and consider the teachings of any faith to be lies.
Now, I would consider it abusive to deliberately teach a child lies. It is on this base that atheists say we should teach our children "nothing" about God. They would rather we abandon our faith and knowledge of God entirely, and all embrace atheism.
For this reason, atheists have battled to eliminate religion from the public venue, especially in the schools. They are pressing their own "spiritual" agenda -- "there is no God". In a way, they are really no different from the religious zealots (of any religion) that try to force their beliefs on a culture, through subverting the youth of the culture.

It is a parent's right and responsibility to teach their children values and ethics. Individuals of the Christian faith want their children to be raised with the teachings of Jesus. He taught love and compassion, forgiveness, understanding, and acceptance. Those are all great values to share with your children. How can that ever be considered abuse?

As Christians we are obliged to show our children the way, the Truth and the Light (God). However, it is abuse to raise a child up in atheism, gnosticism and satanism and paganism because it is a scandal to the child. (Any child within the age of reason understands the natural law that says there is only one God.)

Faith builds family!
my 2 cents

It would be better not to have that illness in the first place
It's abuse because you are preventing them from developing naturally and experiencing all the world has to offer.
Look at suchfun's response and tell me this is tolerant behavior, this is the sort of people your faith breeds
