I asked a question earlier and everyone was like its a good car but expensive to maintain. I dont get it, does that imply it breaks down easily and also exactly what type of maintainance and how much money might it cost

no the xc90 does not break down often have had 1 alternator failure. it was under warranty so customer limped it back to dealer . for customers that actually use the vehicles capability's, i recommend in addition to 3000 mile oil changes all fluids and filters at 30,000 miles , additional ignition tune up at 60,000 and timing-belt with tensioners idlers and water-pump [timing belt driven]at 90,000[with90k belt changes i have yet to see from any manufacture a pump or tensioner that would last to the second belt change at 180k, but i can damn sure show anyone bent valves and destroyed pistons from engines that the owners did not think that these other parts were important enough to change
good luck and have fun and be careful off road.one last thing the auto industry's is stretching out service intervals and procedures to keep the appearance of low cost [ie. 100k spark plug intervals] yes the plugs are lasting about that long but when removed the threads come out with the plug resulting in a nightmarish unexpected repair. plugs are cheep and disposable cylinder heads are not and anti-size compound goes along way to improve the situation[wish the factories used it].

any car you own is expensive to maintain - some just moreso than others. it all boils down to what you want in your vehicle. the volvo, as with any high end vehicle, has a large number of sophisticated systems in it - or in other words more stuff to go wrong. we are on our second xc90 (started with a 2.5 and recently upgraded to the v8). we love the vehicle. the warranty has looked after any issues that we may have had (very few) and volvo has a reputation for safe, practical and comfortable vehicles. a good choice depending on your criteria. some minor cosmetic changes for 2007 and a new engine choice added but otherwise the vehicle remains a class leader.

This forum is useful for all models.

If you live in the UK then there is a company called German Swedish and French Car parts
www.gsf.co.uk, try to avoid Volvo main dealers for service parts.

another site for spares is: http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com/

Just be careful if your car is under warranty you will have to have it maintained at a Volvo approved dealer.

From my experience Volvo alternators fail more than other cars, but their lights are on all the time.

Our XC90 has been a great car, but yes we've had some mantainence on the AWD system and other parts, but it's ok because it was all under warranty.
