It wasn't

Origin
It is a very old rhyme and is known throughout Europe in very much the same form.
It's possible however that 'Humpty Dumpty' refers to a powerful cannon used during the English Civil War (1642-49). It was mounted on top of the St Marys at the Wall Church in Colchester defending the city against siege in the summer of 1648 which fell 'off the wall' and couldn't be mended.

Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the Kings horses, and all the Kings men,
Had scrambled eggs for breakfast.

It doesn't say it at all in the rhyme, but, if you've seen the cartoon/drawings done for the song, it's someone's interpretation of what Humpty Dumpty would look like.

well... I guess Humpty Dumpty (not to be confused with Richard Humpty Vission, a musician) could have been a dish... or something ceramic... But, LeeLee is right. Normally it is generalized cause of the drawing of an egg with arms and legs, sitting on a wall.

It doesn't - but it just started out as an egg in illustation, probably since the nature of the rhyme needs something unstable that can fall and break easliy. Unless he was pissed, then he's be nice and relaxed and just bounce. Or is that if you're hard boiled? hmmmm...
