It costs too much to train and equip more people than we currently have serving. Aside from the fact that it takes an average over 2 years to adequately train a soldier it makes no sense to give someone 3 months of training and send them off to war. Conscripts worked very well when wars used to be all about lining up and shooting at each other but nowadays even your basic combat jobs require the use of vast amounts of technology. Basically, making a short mandatory military service requirement would cost too much and would provide half trained non-motivated troops. It's all $ and sense. What we need is a larger active duty military. I am not convinced I would want any of the guys I go to school with getting drafted anyway....

Can't really think of any . It worked up until the Vietnam War, then because it was not a war to be proud to fight for , our young men protested the only they could . They refused to fight and went to Canada . They were looked on as traitors , until all Americans took up the protest to stop the war .
They didn't want that to happen again so Congress voted for a all volunteered Military .
I don't believe that would ever happen again, because of our patriotism to fight for a just war .
It works for many country's today , and gives the young people a taste of the world and a pride in their country .
I believe a draft is the best thing for our young people to spend 2 years in the Military right out of High School , so they can find themselves and become adults

Mandatory military ends up with people who don't want to be there. These people cause far too many problems than there worth not to mention you end up with all those morons who would forget there head if it weren't attached. This was okay back in the day, but now the army is too high tech and doesn't need a lot of guy's who can't pull there weight in the electronics area. the soldier today is hauling lots of electronics he has to maintain. GPS,video cams on helmet and rifle, laser range finders, lap tops, night vision goggles, and it gets worse in the vehicles. Most damning is the wasted money on dead end troops that will be the 1st to cause trouble and the 1st to hit the road whether honorably or more likely dishonorably.

I served in the all volunteer military and I think it is best if everyone is a volunteer. It is a difficult life, and I if someone asks to be a part of it, they tend to do better. The military is not for everyone, though I enjoyed it.

Conscription is bad. Voluntary armies will work better than mandatory armies, since they are their by will. It's inneffective to draft since those who serve don't necessarily want to be there.

It puts people into harms' way who do not want to be there, often will not make their bests efforts, and can often not be counted on by their fellow troops.
It is also a violation of the 13th Amendment prohibition against involuntary service.

Disadvantage is the burden it would place on Canada as the swarms of cowards flee across the border. A la Vietnam

some people do not believe in or support war, depending upon the reasons for it.
the wealthy usually manage to wriggle out of the draft
it causes stress & strife in the homeland between right & left.
if this country has a valid reason to fight (like in WW2) people will enlist and not have to be forced to serve by the draft.
I remember in the 60's/70's sitting around the TV as they selected birthdates randomly (?) for a draft. It was so scary and I was so worried for my brother.
I remember guys standing in line and burning their draft cards one by one.
I remember the National Guard opening fire on Kent State students.
I repeat, if the cause for war is legitimate there would be no need for the draft. When the people in a nation are split in feelings, NO WAR

People who are forced to fight will probably not fight as hard as someone who volunteered.
