Wow, am I disappointed with most of these answers, (yes I know they are your opinions, but it is still my opinion to think little of them!)
Who can dare say that hippies can no longer exist!? it is very funny to see that a lot of the old stereotypes are still associated with this word.
I was raised in a hippie family, (yes I said it) my parents both grew up in the 60's - 70's and in turn raised me with the same values that they had grown up with. I feel that I am indeed a hippie at heart and I live with the values that my parents have placed upon me.
... but guess what? I have never smoked pot. I do not sit at Starbucks drinking skinny lattes with a bran muffin. I do not practice free love (casual sex). I do not hate the establishment and I do not have a lot of money but still hang with the homeless. I have a Uni education. I dress sensibly when I wish and in loud colours when I wish. I do not have a VW bug or van, (even though I wish I did)...
Needless to say, being hippie is simply a state of mind. The ways of the hippie did not die in the 70's, it has always been there for you to accept. Be at peace with who you are and if you wish to call yourself a hippie do so, no one has the right to take that away.
Live in peace, love and be loved...

Hippie:
It can be a way of life or an image and style, but those are only hippie-esque
It is a state of mind where an attempt is made to see the best in all things and everyone, to be open to new experiences, to be an explorer of the inner worlds and landscape.
It is political because everything is political, but also because to to see the best in all things and everyone is to see the potential of all things and to want an end to injustice and inequality.

The 70's when life was care free. Peace. Flower Power. Fabulous Clothes. Rock and roll. The good ole days. Big Afros, platform shoes, blue leisure suits. Prairie skirts and long dresses with clunky clogs.

It's a dirty long-haired, arrogent child of nature. I have yet to meet a moderate or humble one. It's someone who is too liberal. I'm a Liberal, but hippies hate white American culture. They just 'know better'. They're all in their late 40's now anyhow, so those dorks will all be dead soon.

hippie to me means a bit of history remembered, as well as just the way someone dresses. some say free love people, some claim drug users. but not all do the drugs or the sexual freedom. its like saying you dress Gothic style you are Gothic(no i am not, i just like the style)

They are still free radicals in my opinion.
The thing is there really is no such thing as a real hippie any longer. That generation grew into baby boomers and screwed the following generations financially.
