He was murdered.
On February of 1976 Bonavena fought what would be his last fight against Billy Joiner in Reno, Nevada. Liking the nightlife, he stayed in the Reno/Las Vegas area where he was murdered a few months later by Ross Brymer, a bodyguard at the famous brothel, the Mustang Ranch. Brymer served 15 months in prison for killing Bonavena after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Actually, he was shot with a hunting rifle; that's what happens to "tough guys." Now you know why people say that the cemetery is full of tough guys.
EDITED: I did not realize your nickname, and I did not mean to suggest anything by this. Oscar was not a nice guy if you ever met him. He was fooling around with a woman about 30 years older than him, the wife of a whotehouse owner. He was a regular tough guy that intimidated and bullied people, like some former boxers do, especially when they get drunk. Would you REALLY want to live next to someone like Toney, for example? And, yes, "the cemetery is full of tough guys" is an old, old saying and the ending of the saying is, "... at the hands of cowards." Not all present and former boxers are bullies but a few are too many.
