there would often be pain, mostly in the side, and they'd feel tender too. also your urine might look unusual, darker, cloudy, foamy etc. if you have the slightest suspicion you might have one, go to a doctor a.s.a.p., otherwise things can get really nasty!

I Just had one at the end of this past year. I felt at first like i had the flu because i had an elevated temperature. My back pain was excruciating, only on one side and it would come in waves and then stay. Also my bladder kidney area was very sensitive. For three days i was not able to eat or drink anything. When I went to the doctor they used a urine sample and within seconds told me i had a serious kidney infection. And they gave me an injection of some medicine and told me that i was very close to being admitted to the hospital. They gave me 24 hours to keep water down...or at least ice. They had also said i waited to long to go to the doctor...so if you think you may have one dont worry just GO. They dont do anything baseides make you drink water in front of them and then give a urine sample.thats it. Im scared of going to doctors and that time that i went i just layed there like HELP ME PLEASE. I didn't even have the mind to worry about where i was i just wanted to get better. Kidney infections can be very dangerous so i would go ask a doctor immediately if i were to go through this again.

Kidney infections are dangerous and you need to see a doctor as soon as possible. Usual symptoms start with a bladder infection (that works it's way back up toward the kidney). You would have painful, burning upon urination, possible blood in your urine and maybe even a fever. The bladder pain is bad and you feel frequent needs to pee. Kidney pain is usually located in the flank area of the back (put your hands on your waist and reach your thumbs around your back and push in there...does it hurt?) Your doctor will order antibiotics and something to stop the burning pain when you pee. If the kidney infection is bad enough, there will be more extensive procedures...SEE A DOCTOR!

Your back will hurt/be tender under like your ribs. Anitibiotics will help. Most Kidney Infections are caused but a UTI. So you may have that as well. Make an appt. with the doc.

Frequent urination,Strong, persistent urge to urinate ,Burning sensation or pain when urinating , Abdominal pain or pressure
Cloudy urine with a strong odor . Pus or blood in your urine (hematuria) . Inability to urinate (urine retention) . Need to urinate during the night (nocturia) . Back, side (flank) or groin pain
Fever
Antibiotics will usually clear the infection. An antibiotic is usually prescribed straight away if a kidney infection is suspected, even before the result of the urine test is known. Some bacteria are resistant to some antibiotics. Therefore, sometimes you may need a change of antibiotic if the urine test shows a bacterium which is resistant to the initial antibiotic. The course of antibiotics is for 7 - 14 days, depending on which one is used.

Treatment with antibiotics given by mouth for 14 days is sometimes successful if the person has no nausea or vomiting, no signs of dehydration, pain that is controlled with drugs taken by mouth, and no high fever or chills. Otherwise, the person is usually treated initially in the hospital. If hospitalization is needed, after 1 or 2 days of injected or intravenous antibiotics, treatment can usually be switched to antibiotics given by mouth.

Antibiotic treatment to prevent recurrence of the infection usually continues for 2 weeks but may last as long as 6 weeks for men, in whom the infection is commonly more difficult to eradicate. A final urine sample is usually taken 4 to 6 weeks after the antibiotic treatment is finished to make sure the infection has been eradicated.

I am assuming you are referring to a UTI or urinary tract infection. If you had a kidney infection you wouldn't be asking this question.....you'd be in the hospital. Some of the symptoms of a UTI are:
Fever
Nausea
Vomiting
Burning with urination
Blood in the urine
Cloudy or foul smelling urine
Abdominal pain
Antibiotics are the only way to get rid of a UTI. It is caused by a bacteria, usually escherichia coli. If you think you have a UTI I would suggest that you seek the attention of a physician as soon as possible.

Discolored urine, foul smelling urine, low grade temperature, painful urination. Kidney infections usually will not clear up on there on. Yes, antibiotics, usually start feeling relief with one or two doses. But be sure and take antibiotics as your doctor instructs you to. Best of luck to you

Lower back pain, fever, back and low abdominal spasms. Possibly blood in the urine. Antibiotics will help, but you need to get to the doctor soon or you will have LOTS of pain!
