You do not punish a dog with epilepsy...

I had a Jack Russell that my daughter took to live with her when she married because she felt lonely in a new home when her husband worked late, or went out with the lads.

She was walking it one day when it got attacked by another dog and fought back, because a Jack Russell is a stomachy breed, and the other owner hit my dog across the head with a metal lead... and he had an instant fit. Wich terrified my then early twenties daughter. She couldn't handle it.

He fitted often after this and so, after living away from me for three years, he came home... which is another story in itself, because it involves him 'knowing' where he was without being shown, because his rapport with me was so strong.

His epilepsy was worse for a while, but with love and proper care, and alertness on my part, and medication from the vet, slowly he improved...

Your dog is messing because he's frightened, he senses you are scared and impatient with him... you need to see the vet and get advice about behaviour... and read up on epilepsy in dogs... and learn more tolerance. If you love him, love him despite his problems, he is the dog you chose, he is not his epilepsy!

And don't punish him/her, or scold... just clean it up and reassure him, and take him outside... then praise and praise him when he poos outside... and when he has an accident indoors, just say quietly, without fuss or impatience... "Oh dear..." (you can sigh) then ignore his doleful look and clean it up... and don't notice him for an hour... totally ignore any pleas for attention for at least an hour after each 'event'.

Then when he does a clean night or day, or goes outside and poos, praise him. He's not able to control his muscles during spasm and this could be the reason why, he cannot hold it back to go outside. Epilepsy can be happening without outside signs, it can come in many ways, and you need to understand that you don't always 'see' a fit, since not all fits are full blown. He could be fitting while he poos... which means, he's pooing because his muscles wont hold it in! And it's distressing him, more than it distresses you!

Be alert and let him out often!

Be kind and get to know his illness, then you'll really be his friend:-)

It can happen because he might be having petite mal fits which you might not notice, he may be getting really stressed out as well so try to keep him calm when you're going out by putting on some classical music which has been proven to help beat stress in dogs in a kennel environment and it will really help him at home too.

The question should be is he having seizures when you are gone. If so then he has no control of his bowels. Is he on medication to control the seizures? If he's not having seizures then I suggest you go back to crate training him while you are gone.

I would ask your vet, hon- it may be a part of his illness, and therefore treatable. If not, your vet can advise you on how to overcome this.
