The best HDTVs out there now are the 1080P DLPs
Check them at Bestbuy or Circuit City or Sam's Club and compare them to pictures on either LCDs or plasmas.
Look CLOSE. The DLP pictures look like moving photographs. The others show lines and dots and...
The only drawback on the DLPs is that presently they are using an expensive ($200 to $300) bulb that has a life of only 2,000 to 3,000 hours.
I am waiting for the new ones that will use lasers as a light source. They are brighter, use less power and last the lifetime of the whole set.
The plasmas burn in when using games and having the same picture on for a long time, the LCDs lose pixels and end up with permanently black dots (sometime a whole line)

The best pictures availabe now are the Sony SXRD rear-projection units. TRUE 1920x1080 full 1080p resolution, excellent brightness, deep blacks. The DLP sets also have good pictures, but they are not true 1920x1080 pixels. They use a technique called "wobulation" to simulate 1080p For details see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wobulation . For video, this is ok, the picture a little softer than the Sony. Some people like that, it looks more like film. For video games, however, especially XBOX which can output 1080p, you want every pixel clear. The new model Sonys accept 1080p as input, something that very few other sets do. See http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_KDS_60A2000/4505-6484_7-31901232.html?tag=pdtl-list&ar=o
(a 50" version is available)
