hopefully its just a change in metabolism with age, or lower tolerance to higher temperatures. diabetes is more common in female dogs actually and the symptoms are, excessive thirst, tiredness, weight loss and hunger. she needs to go to the vet for blood and urine tests. most of the time dogs will need injections of daily insulin much like people but less severe cases only require a change of diet or oral medication.
it could also be a kidney disorder, and signs may include: excessive thirst, passing alot of urine, mouth ulcers, anaemia, weight loss, and bad breath. this will have to be diagnosed and treated by a vet.
it could also be a problem with the female reproductive system, but again, a vet will have to determine that.
anytime something is abnormal about your pet it is a good idea to at least call a vet or take the animal in for a visit. some problems could go from minor to severe in no time and the little time you do take could mean the difference between life and death for your loved one. good luck and hopefully it wont be anything serious.

RE:
Why is my dog so thirsty?
My 8 year old golden retriever has been extremely thirsty lately. It hasn't been that hot outside, so that's why I'm worried. What could be wrong with her?

My 3 year old Airedale had a congenital Kidney defect. This was one of the symptoms.
Is she also peeing alot?
Is she experiencing any vomiting?
Have you changed her diet at all?
(Maybe she is getting more salt?)
Have you looked in her mouth to make sure she hasn't gotten anything stuck in there? Maybe she is trying to get something out? Something stuck in her teeth? Are there any sores in her mouth? Maybe the cool of the water feels good on them?
Best bet is to see the vet.

Paul h suggests giving your dog antifreeze. DON'T. IT WILL KILL HIM. I don't know what kind of sick and hateful person wants to see you kill your dog, but take your dog to the vet. There may be something seriously wrong with him.
...AS FOR YOU, PAUL H, THAT STREAK OF CRUELTY IS NOT FUNNY. YOU SHOULD BE PITIED, THEN PUT IN A STRAIGHT JACKET.

I believe she will need a blood test to determine whether or not she has diabetes. There are other diseases that can cause the problem, but the Vet will definitely have to check her out. So, please make an appointment and take her in for an exam.

You certainly must stay home and care for your beloved pet. How could you POSSIBLY go to school . . . or a job . . . in this time of crisis? (Dogs only eight years old usually don't get diabetes. Not unless they are fat and poorly exercised.)

Believe it or not she could have diabetes. I can't be sure ,I am not a vet. But I would have her checked by one. Do not listen to paul h. antifreeze will kill him. To paul h. You should be ashamed to even suggest such a thing. You are a cruel person.

Does her pee smell funny sweet? Because extreme thirst and sucrose smelling urine are sign of diabetes. You should get her to a vet and have a checkup...
