I wash all my greens (except iceberg lettuce) when I get them home. I separate the leaves and let them sit in a sinkful of cool water for 5 minutes or so. Then I rinse them well and drain well. I wrap them in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and put into a plastic bag, closing the bag good. Then I store it in the vegetable drawer in the fridge. It usually lasts a good week. For iceberg lettuce I ususally try to wash it at least a couple of hours before I use it by removing the core and letting cool water run into the head. Let it drain for a few minutes, then wrap it in paper towels and put in a plastic bag, then into the fridge to crisp for a couple of hours. It gets really nice and crispy.

I've been told the best way to keep lettuce fresh is to remove the core, end piece done by grabbing it and twisting and pull out, then rinse the lettuce, pat it dry with a paper towel set out for 15 min to let the rest of water drain off and then place in a bowl made to store lettuce Tupperware has one and theres other brands and close tightly release the air and refrigerate.

Don't wash it before you put it in the fridge. Wait until you use it. Then take off some of the leaves and wash only them. Store the rest in the veg. bin on a paper towel. It should last over a week.

Try stashing your lettuce in a zip lock bag (gallon size) with a paper towel. It'll last longer.
Only wash the leaves as you pull them off to use them.

lettuce will turn brown (rust) when exposed to air. just be sure to tightly seal it in a bag. i wouldn't wash any more of the head of lettuce then you were gonna use.

almost indefinitely, if you leave it in the pot, just harvest the older leaves for what you need, and don't cut the stem/core from the roots, that way they never need refridgeration. Never goes bad, and takes up less space in the veggie drawer.
You save a bunch of money for other things you need, like the main course!!
cheers!!!
