I am a trail runner and I like to run 10 miles plus at a time. I would like a dog that stands tall with a medium build.

Any of the sight hounds (afghans, greyhounds, scottish deerhounds, irish wolfhounds, salukis, pharaoh hounds, ibizan hounds) would be thrilled to go for a run like that every day!

Also, a lot of the sporting dogs, setters, pointers, retrievers, weimaraners, would love that kind of exercise.

Also a dalmation, husky or malamute, doberman, german shepherd.

You'll have to make sure that you get a really sound dog, no hip problems or things like that if you want a running partner.

Whatever dog you choose be sure to get one who's bloodline is clear of hip dysplasia for at least 5 generations. Certified by Michigan State Univ. Trust me on this. You can pay more now, or end up paying a few thousand per hip or just having a dog with chronic pain. Labs, G.Retrievers, I like the blue heelers a lot for long runs. They are bred to herd cattle. I have one that is 18. Has great hips too. They aren't such a large breed dog so aren't as prone to hip problems. Border collies are good. Or Australian shepherds. Do lots of research. Don't be impulsive. A dog is for life. Especially when you want one to run with you, you should research each breed, then individual breeders. Good luck.

All the sporting breeds love to run..also sight hounds..Of course Labs are always a good choice, I have a Black Lab and a Lab/hound mix...they both are becoming elderly now but absolutely loved and needed to run when they were young..Actually the Lab/Hound mix was alot more energetic and had more stamina than the lab...I would consider getting a mix from the local shelter..They tend to have less health problems in general....

Definitely a lab. They NEED 5 to 10 miles of walking or running a day, and if you train correctly they could do more.

Any dog with a lot of energy will be perfect. Most likely the sporting breeds are going to be your best bet. They are breed to spend hours on end in the field so they are going to have more energy.
also try concider a mix breed.
Maybe a lab, or weimarianer, viszla.,... just some ideas.

Nothing with a short nose. They end up having pulmonary problems.

I have a black Lab. She outruns me and my husband everyday. My husband just graduated the police academy, They laughed and said my lab should have graduated first.
