It's called tinnitis. Usually it denotes that there was some ear damage at some point in your life. Go to an ENT specialist and have it checked out.

When I was a kid I had hearing more like a dog. I could hear things that no one else around me could. In the house where I grew up I often heard a ringing sound that would start off soft and low and build up to a very high pitched and loud ringing. Only occasionally someone else in my home was able to hear it, but most times only I could. Never figured out for sure what caused it. I blamed it on some electrical wires 'cause that's where it seemed to me the sound was coming from. Those were wires from a removed fluorescent fixture sticking out of the wall.

At other times, even now, I sometimes hear a ringing in my ears. Kind of like the ringing you hear after being exposed to loud music for a period of time, but just not exactly the same. It usually starts soft and builds up. Sometimes I can wake up with it and it stays all day. Sometimes I wonder if it's not maybe caused by something like high blood pressure???
